What to Expect in Your Child’s First Play Therapy Session | NYC Play Therapist

Many parents wonder what happens in play therapy and how it can help their child feel more understood, confident, and supported. It’s completely natural to feel curious or even nervous about taking this step. As a therapist specializing in play therapy for children in NYC, I’m here to guide you and your child through this process in a safe, creative, and supportive way.

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a unique and evidence-based approach that allows children to express their emotions, experiences, and needs through play—their natural language. For children who may struggle to communicate verbally, play therapy offers a safe outlet to explore feelings, process challenges, and build resilience.

In play therapy, toys, games, art supplies, and creative activities are used as tools to foster expression and healing. Whether your child is dealing with anxiety, behavioral challenges, grief, or big life transitions, play therapy helps them feel seen, understood, and empowered.

What Happens in the First Session?

  • Meeting with the Parent(s)
The first session often begins with a brief conversation between the therapist and parent(s). This time allows me to learn more about your child—such as their strengths, challenges, and recent experiences. I may also answer any questions you have about the process.
  • Creating a Safe Space for Your Child
The focus of the first session is building trust and comfort. Children often feel nervous entering a new space, and that’s completely okay. My priority is to help your child feel safe and welcome in the therapy room.
  • Exploring Play
Once your child feels ready, we begin to explore the room together. They may gravitate toward toys, art supplies, sand trays, or games—anything that captures their attention. Your child leads the way, choosing activities that feel right to them.

    Examples:
    • A child may draw pictures or build structures to express something they cannot say aloud.
    • Others may act out scenarios with puppets, dolls, or figurines to process relationships or emotions.
  • Observation and Connection During the session, I observe your child’s play to better understand their feelings, needs, and communication style. I also gently engage with them, building a connection and earning their trust. This non-intrusive, supportive approach allows your child to express themselves in their own time.

How Play Therapy Helps Your Child Grow

Play therapy is a powerful tool for growth and healing. Over time, children often experience:

  • Emotional Expression: A safe space to share feelings like anger, sadness, worry, or fear.
  • Reduced Anxiety or Behavioral Struggles: Processing emotions leads to greater emotional regulation and confidence.
  • Improved Self-Esteem: Feeling seen and understood helps children build trust in themselves and others.
  • Healthier Relationships: Learning how to communicate, trust, and connect with others more effectively.

Through play therapy, children find ways to understand their world, face challenges, and develop the tools they need to thrive.

What to Expect as a Parent

While play therapy focuses on your child’s healing and growth, your involvement is an important part of the process. I regularly communicate with parents to share insights, progress, and strategies for support at home.

You’ll never be left wondering what’s happening—play therapy is a collaborative process where we work together to ensure your child feels seen, understood, and supported both in and out of the therapy room.
